Mac Delete Disk

Disk

  1. Delete Disk Mac

Disk Utility User Guide

When you no longer need a disk set or want to remove individual disk members permanently from the set, you can delete the set.

I have a imac from mid 2011 with 8 GB Memory & 3 TB Hard Drive running Mac OS X 10.10.5. Since yesterday my mac will boot and then shut down. So I went to Mac OS utilities and went to disk and accidentally deleted my 3TB hard drive. Then I wanted to get a fresh copy of Yosemite and it is asking. Pull down the  Apple menu and choose ‘System Preferences' Go to the Time Machine system preference panel, then scroll down in the drive list to find 'Add or Remove Backup Disk' and click that Select the hard drive, disk, or backup volume that you want to remove from Time Machine backups, then click on 'Remove Disk'. To free up disk space, it's helpful to know exactly what is using disk space on your Mac. A hard disk analysis tool like Disk Inventory X will scan your Mac's hard disk and display which folders and files are using up the most space. You can then delete these space hogs to free up space.

Important: You can remove disks from a mirrored RAID set or concatenated disk set without deleting the set. To remove a disk from a striped RAID set, you must first delete the set—which deletes all your data. Always back up before you delete the set.

Delete a disk set

When you delete a set, the data recorded on the disks is not deleted. For example, deleting a mirrored RAID set leaves each disk in the set with a copy of all the RAID data. When you delete a concatenated set, all the data is copied to the first disk of the set (as long as the first disk has enough disk space to store the data), resulting in a single volume with all the data.

  1. Back up any important files.

  2. In the Disk Utility app on your Mac, select the disk set you want to delete in the sidebar.

  3. Click the Delete RAID button.

  4. Click Delete.
